Building a brighter tomorrow with LEGO® bricks

East Bay Mini Maker Faire 2019

Last Sunday, as we do every year, BayLUG had a display at the East Bay Mini Maker Faire in Oakland, CA. Several of us brought Micropolis modules and we had a pretty extensive city set up, plus a variety of other models. See the photos below for more details – click on any photo to go to the Flickr photo album.

The Monster’s Inc door scene was built by Terra and Erik Wilson, and Erik also built most of the models in the next photo.

These models were built by Erik and another club member whose name I missed.

Here is the Micropolis section. I brought all of my models in that style, and joined them up with those from several other builders: Naomi and Zonker, plus two kids who weren’t club members (yet) but wanted to participate.

This section is Naomi’s area. Her online handle is “Brickanista” so she called this section “Brickanistopolis.” She had made several water modules for a coastal area.

The treehouse on the right side was built by a young girl who built it out of parts from our play area along with some pieces provided by Naomi.

My models were more toward the middle, including the elevated train station (which I still have yet to properly blog about, sorry!), gas station (ditto), office building, retail block, park, and two houses. The row of miniature modular downtown buildings at the top left is a LEGO kit (set 10230, Mini Modulars), for which I built an adapter module so it could integrate into Micropolis.

The red building at the lower middle was the other contribution we had from a non member; a young boy who was there to support his father’s exhibit in a nearby room, but he came by during setup Saturday while Naomi was putting her things out, and was inspired to go home and build a Micropolis building for the next day.

Here are some more of my modules. The large building in the front is a hospital based on the San Francisco General Hospital buildings (I built it a few years ago but haven’t posted a blog post about it yet, sorry!).

The large hedgehog was provided by Paul, who said it was the character “Dinsdale”* from a Monty Python sketch (Actually set 40171, LEGO Friends Hedgehog Storage, minus the bow), which we put on a blank Micropolis module so it could be ravaging the town. We left a trail of knocked-over trees in its wake, and I removed one of the elevated track supports.

* Upon further research when writing this post, it appears that we all misremembered the hedgehog’s name from the sketch – the hedgehog is Spiny Norman, and Dinsdale was one of the other characters, who was apparently paranoid of being pursued by Spiny Norman the giant hedgehog.

In this view we can see the modules to the right of the canal, built by Zonker (Zonker is the one in the tie-die behind the table).

At the end of the show, the Micropolis contributors all got together for a group photo. Pictured are Zonker, myself, and Naomi in back, and our two guest builders in the front.

Besides the Micropolis modules, I also brought some of my sculptural pieces: Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture & my LEGO one inspired by it, Kermit the Frog with banjo, Q*bert, Sheep (no it’s not Shaun, just a generic sheep), teddy bear, owl (blog post needed), kangaroo, and smokejumper plane.

These Bionicle and mech figures were brought by Leonard.

Besides Dinsdale, Paul also brought this building, which he said was earthquake-damaged, and an abstract fan sculpture.
